i feel like counter-trolling is an essential skill that kids online aren’t learning and it’s kinda worrying

like back in my day, the day of online forums, learning how to trick someone in to getting themselves banned was an essential skill. if you could tell someone was a chud, you would ask them short, leading questions and watch them get frustrated and post longer and longer rants until they said something that would catch a mod’s attention and get them banned and/or at least publicly humiliated.

and guess what? that’s the exact same tactics the alt-right use now. these people are exclusively acting in bad faith. every interaction these people post online is done with the intention of getting someone to respond to them so they can screenshot the massive paragraphs of text and laugh

so, what’s the solution?

dare ‘em to post dick pics.

don’t acknowledge the content of the stuff they post. if you see someone trying to engage you in bad faith just dare them to post pictures of their penis until they either get frustrated and leave or get frustrated and do it. either way they lose.

this is the tactic used by the fans of a podcast (that i haven’t listened to) called the Chapo Trap House, and 4chan’s /pol/ users fucking HATE them. they hate Chapo Trap House and think they’re crazy because Chapo Trap House fans refuse to engage in meaningful debate and repeatedly demand dick pics. they get frustrated and leave. it works.

Some of you never used your position as a mod on an a series of unfortunate events forum to get a racist troll to post evidence of their tax fraud and it shows

…that second comment is oddly specific and I’m a little scared

New anti-AI tool from the team developing Glaze that looks to poison prompts and ruin data sets entirely.

image

The tool can go so far as to trick AI into generating things it didn’t ask for. 50 “poisoned” images of dogs into a data set yield typical errors companies have been working to get rid of: weird proportions, extra limbs, etc. When they added 300 samples, it was drastic enough to make a data set that was trained to generate “dogs” into “cats” making the tool basically useless.

It’s not out yet, but they’re adding it to Glaze and they intend on making it open source.

Welcome to the age of the AI arms race.

It feels taboo as a childfree person to admit this but I actually do have concerns about who is going to take care of me when I’m old. The elder care system in our nation relies A LOT on the unpaid care labor of adult children. I just don’t think that’s a good reason to have kids.

“But you’ll have more money!” does not completely put this to rest for me. Neither does “Buy care insurance!” Even if I can afford direct personal care, who is going to advocate for me to get it? Who is going to navigate bureaucracy for me when I’m 80?

“You could have kids and they might still not take care of you when you’re old!” That’s true, but doesn’t solve my problem.

I think childfree people get very defensive about this question because its used as a kind of “gotcha!” against us, but I actually do not feel we can afford to be in denial about this reality. Based on current trends of more people in their 30s stating they intend to be permanently childfree, we are going to see a huge wave of childfree adults hitting the eldercare system at once in a few decades. Childfree people in their 30s should be advocating around eldercare NOW.

going to start using “sex workers are workers” instead of “sex work is work” because it more directly gets to the point of the latter

sex workers are workers, who experience the same kinds of exploitation and abuse that all workers do.

sex workers need labor protections like all workers. sex workers should have safe working conditions like all workers.

Karen meme is a psyop to let corporations take advantage of everyone. If I don’t scream at my property manager nothing gets done. I would rather be a Karen than be a sucker!

the term karen originally came from aave. whatever it is now, it wasn’t a psyop, just a way for black folk to express frustration.

bro when Karen first popped off it seemed very obvious that it was meant to denote specifically white women using their race (and frequently class status) to terrorize people of color minding their own business in public by threatening them with the police while being secure in the knowledge that their race was likely to make them come across as a victim in need of defending no matter innocuous the behavior of their target, like the infamous BBQ Becky, Jennifer Schulte, or Central Park Karen herself, Amy Cooper. seeing “Karen” getting watered down to mean “woman being annoying at starbucks” has been SO strange

The Woman Behind The World’s Most Famous Tarot Deck Was Nearly Lost In History

image

For centuries, people of all walks of life have turned to tarot to divine what may lay ahead and reach a higher level of self-understanding.

The cards’ enigmatic symbols have become culturally ingrained in music, art and film, but the woman who inked and painted the illustrations of the most widely used set of cards today – the Rider-Waite deck from 1909, originally published by Rider & Co. – fell into obscurity, overshadowed by the man who commissioned her, Arthur Edward Waite.

Now, over 70 years after her death, the creator Pamela Colman Smith has been included in a new exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York highlighting many underappreciated artists of early 20th-century American modernism in addition to famous names like Georgia O’Keeffe and Louise Nevelson.
